W. Jakarta mayor resigns to run in 2014 elections

West Jakarta Mayor Burhanudin has reportedly resigned from his post so that he can run in the 2014 general elections. It was also reported that Burhanuddin would channel his candidacy through the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party.
Employment Agency head I Made Karmayoga confirmed that Burhanuddin would soon quit his post as mayor. He said Burhanuddin should have retired from his current post last year but because of the Jakarta gubernatorial election, his mayoral status was extended for a year.
However, Karmayoga acknowledged that he had yet to receive Burhanuddin’s resignation letter.
Meanwhile, Gerindra Jakarta board chairman Muhammad Taufik confirmed that Burhanudin had joined his party to run in the 2014 elections.
“He has registered as a legislative candidate representing West Jakarta,” he said.
The rules say civil servants must leave their jobs in the event that they run for a legislative position.
Previously, Jakarta city secretary Fadjar Panjaitan also resigned from his post after joining the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to run for next year’s elections. (dic)
