Three arrested for air soft gun possession

Tangerang Police apprehended three people identified as MD, 35, MDa, 39 and MZA, 39 for allegedly possessing air soft guns during a crackdown on firearms and explosive materials on Monday, kompas.com reported.
Chief detective Comr. Shinto Silitonga said the three, who worked as resellers of waste from a shoe factory in Bitung, Cikupa district, told the police that they used the guns to protect their business.
“The suspects said they bought the soft gun to give them a confidence boost as well as to protect themselves against people who might disturb their business,” he said on Tuesday.
MD bought the M84 with a 6-millimeter caliber gun for Rp 3.7 million (US$380) from a seller identified as J in the Legok area early last year. MDa bought his Cold MK IV Series 80 DA from the same seller, while MZA bought an MRP air soft gun for Rp 3.8 million from another seller identified as B.
The three suspects were charged under the 1951 Emergency Law on firearm and explosive substance possession, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment.
“We urge people to not carry soft guns because they are illegal. Those who know anyone in possession of air soft guns should inform the police,” Shinto said.
