Subsidized Oil Fuel Price Hike and Restriction as Optimal Policy

Acting Head of Fiscal Policy Office (BKF) Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro assessed, the government requires increasing the oil fuel price in order to maintain fiscal health and complement the subsidized oil fuel consumption restriction plan. “The optimal policy is between the price increase and tight restriction of subsidized oil fuel consumption, both of them should be combined, so you don’t have to increase the price that much,” he explained.
According to him, the best time to increase the oil fuel price is April 2013 because inflation is usually low during harvest period. However, this measure depends on the approval of the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. He further stated that 10 percent increase is the most ideal option.
As known, the availability of subsidized oil fuel, whose price is below the international market price, has stimulated oil import. This also contributes to Indonesia’s trade deficit.
