In
response to protests by the media, an official
with the General Elections Commission (KPU) announced the annulment of an
article in KPU regulations stipulating punishment for the press.
“We will remove
article 46 entirely and focus on violations by political parties. Authorities like
the press council and the Indonesian
Broadcasting Commission can address violations
by the press,” KPU commissioner Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah said on Wednesday according to Kompas.com.
Another KPU Commissioner Hadar N Gumay earlier admitted that the
KPU
had been careless in adopting the article because
they were on tight deadlines.
Article 46 stipulated various punishments for journalists and media over violations during the general
elections. The article allowed the KPU to revoke publishing permits if severe violations are spotted.
The article sparked protests from the Independent Journalist
Association and the Legal Aid Foundation for the Press, who claimed that the KPU had no authority over the press and should
entrust monitoring to the appropriate agencies.(nai/dic)
