Herizon, 45, the headmaster of state-junior high school SMP
Negeri 28 in Batam City, has attempted suicide by drinking insecticide
after he was reported to the police for sexually abusing 19 female
students.
The accusations first came to light on Monday when the
school reported the alleged abuse cases to Batam vice mayor Rudi. The
female students then filed reports with Barelang police precinct.
Head of Barelang detective unit, Comr.Ponco Indriyo, confirmed on Wednesday that police had received 19 reports.
“We
summoned the accused for questioning on Tuesday, but he did not appear.
We planned to summon him again today, but we’ve been informed that he
has attempted suicide,” said Ponco.
Herizon was taken to Awal Bros Hospital, Batam, on early Wednesday, and he is now in intensive care.
Batam’s
Teachers Union head Rustam Effendi told The Jakarta Post that the union
gave its full support to Herizon who had a good record as principal.
“We are fully supporting Pak Herizon; the allegations have to be proven,” he said. (ebf)
